Community News

All Schools Open - Monday August 25, 2014

Dear San Rafael City Schools Families:

We know that Sunday’s earthquake centered in nearby Napa may have caused some anxiety and fear.

Aftershocks are expected for days and weeks following this major earthquake. Each of our sites have been inspected by our Maintenance & Operations staff. No damage has been identified at any school site.

We want to assure you that schools are among the safest places in an earthquake and want to remind you of the measures we take to ensure the safety of everyone on our campuses. You may not be aware that your child’s school is built to withstand earthquakes. Homes and buildings are built

following building code standards; however, the Field Act requires California public K-12 school buildings to be  designed to withstand earthquakes. Since the Field Act was implemented, no students in a California school
building have been harmed during an earthquake.

Each school has a comprehensive safety plan that includes seismic events like earthquakes. At the beginning of each school year, students and staff practice safety drills. With the proximity of this earthquake, we will be sure to drill more frequently.

Students are protected from the dangers of earthquakes when they are at school be cause:
• Schools are built to Field Act standards
• Schools have fire alarm and sprinkler systems
• Schools have a Safe School Plan for emergencies
• Schools are inspected regularly
• Schools conduct emergency drills

Should there be an event on our campuses that causes us to enact our emergency safety plan, parents will be notified by phone, text or email as to how we are handling the crisis and whether students must remain in the

protective environment of the school for an extended period. Our school employees are legally designated  “emergency service workers”. In cases of emergency we will remain at school to care for all of our children.

Please make sure that your contact information on your child’s emergency card remains up-to-date. If an emergency should happen while you are out of the neighborhood, school staff will remain with your child for as long as necessary. Your child will only be released to you or those with proper identification who you have designated on your Emergency Contact List on the emergency card.

Keeping your child safe is our highest priority and while we do not expect school emergencies, we are prepared should they happen. If you have any questions, please contact your school office.

Sincerely,
Mike Watenpaugh

Superintendent
